How to Identify a Termite Infestation
Termites aren’t always easy to spot, which means they can wreak havoc on your home before you even realize what’s happening. Look for the following signs to identify if you have a termite infestation:
- Termite pellet mounds that resemble small piles of salt or pepper
- Usually resembling fish scales, wings left behind after swarms
- Mud tubes climbing up your foundation
- Termite swarms flying anywhere on your property
- Drywall that is discolored or drooping
- Peeling paint that looks like water damage
- Wood that makes a hollow sound when tapped
- Pinpoint sized holes in your drywall
- Buckling wooden or laminate flooring
- Floor tile loosening
- Squeaky floorboards
- Wood that is crumbling and damaged
- Windows and doors that are stuck
- Furniture, floorboards, or walls with maze-like patterns

Drywood Termites
The drywood termite is a pesky insect that can cause major structural damage to homes. They’re known for swarming on sunny, warm days after sudden temperature increases. A drywood termite colony can contain up to 2,500 members. Dry wood in attics, such as beams, rafters, and joists attracts drywood termite infestations. It is possible for them to be transported to new locations via infested furniture, picture frames, etc. Termites can eat through support beams, floors, and walls, causing expensive house repairs.
Subterranean Termites
There are many types of termites, but the subterranean causes the most damage of any termite species. These insects build distinctive “mud tubes” in order to reach food sources and protect themselves from open air. They eat wood 24 hours per day using their saw-toothed jaws which bite off small pieces one piece at a time! Over time if these pests aren’t stopped early enough they could critically damage building structures sometimes leading to total collapse of a building.
Formosan Termites
Formosan termites are the most voracious, aggressive, and devious of over 2,000 species. Several red flags point to a Formosan termite infestation. When an area has been infested by Formosans, the first sign is the presence of swarmers or winged reproductives. Homeowners should inspect their windowsills, doors, lights, and vents closely for swarmers and their discarded wings.

The termite group causing the problems must be determined because each one differs biologically and thus requires different methods of control.
Soil Treatment: In order to treat subterranean termites that live in the soil, we place a barrier around the structure and treat the soil with a termiticide that acts as a treatment barrier. As termites return to the soil to nest, this type of treatment prevents future termite infestations.
Wood Treatment: In order to kill any existing termite colonies and prevent future ones from growing, we use a variety of different wood treatments. Treatment options include sprays on the surface, injected sprays, and Borate-treated wood. Borate wood treatments are used by pest control professionals to prevent future termite infestations.
