How To Know When To Fumigate

When you have pests that try and turn your home into their home too, it can get tiresome having to keep track of them. When you call an inspector, you can discuss what measures you want to take in expelling your unwanted house guests. You can spot treat your house, which means setting traps or spraying certain areas of the house where you know that those pests are living.

How Strong is Fumigation?

Fumigation is a serious matter when it comes to getting rid of pests in your house. The process requires the use of sulfuryl fluoride, a highly lethal gas. You’ll also be required to cover your structure in a tarp. When you fumigate, you can be assured that it will be strong enough to kill any pesky critters that shouldn’t be there. Rodents, bed bugs, cockroaches, moths and even termites will be affected by the strength of the chemicals that are used in the fumigation process.

You should be aware that this is a completely separate process from bug bombs or fogging. Fumigation is the strongest option available to you, because the fumes affect the entirety of the structure being fumigated. Another advantage to fumigation is that you don’t have to worry about specifically locating nesting areas or areas of high traffic for the pests that you’re looking to get rid of.

What you should consider is the health and safety of all occupants. Fumigation uses incredibly strong chemicals. The process of fumigation could take up to a week depending on the size and severity of your infestation problem. So you’ll need to account for time spent away from your home and also what to do with your property inside the home such as furniture or pets. You’ll also have to remove any plants and dispose of food items or vacuum seal food items that may come in contact with the chemicals used.

Is it Worth it?

Because fumigation is the most thorough pest control method, it is also the most expensive. Depending on the size of the house, you could look at anywhere from $1-$3 per square foot. You’ll also need to find accomodations for the time that you’ll be away. And another point of concern to note is the possibility of theft. Certain burglars will in fact target homes specifically during fumigation times because they are aware that the premises will not have occupants. If you’re in an area where you could be targeted, consider hiring security guards or at least have neighbors keep a look out.
